ERGO Insurance Year: 51 Million in Property Damage from Bullet Holes in Windows to Train Accidents
In 2025, ERGO Insurance compensated a total of €50.7 million for property damages, with significant portions stemming from traffic accidents and fires.
In 2025, ERGO Insurance reported compensating €50.7 million in property damages. Traffic and comprehensive insurance claims comprised the majority of these damages; however, the most financially significant losses were associated with fires and train accidents, with damages exceeding several hundred thousand euros and even topping a million in some instances. This highlights the widespread impact of severe incidents on insurance claims for the year.
Caterina Lepvalts, the head of claims handling at ERGO, noted that water damage in homes remained a persistent issue in 2025, accounting for a third of all household claims. The primary causes were identified as burst pipes, leaking hoses, malfunctioning washing or dishwashing machines, and faulty boilers. This trend underscores the need for homeowners to be vigilant about plumbing and appliance maintenance to mitigate such risks.
Additionally, while the usual occurrences of damages to electronic devices continued, Lepvalts mentioned surprising cases that came to their attention, including instances of bullet holes in balcony glass and technology crashing through ceilings, necessitating the installation of new ceilings. These peculiar incidents demonstrate the unpredictable nature of property damage claims, prompting insurance providers to remain agile and attentive to a diverse range of claims.
