Trenčín has Declared for Free Europe. The Opening Weekend of EHMK Showed an Impressive Show and the Strength of Community Projects

Trenčín has become the second Slovak city to hold the title of European Capital of Culture, marking a significant milestone with an investment of 65 million euros for the project.

After 13 years, Trenčín becomes only the second Slovak city to be designated as the European Capital of Culture (EHMK). The opening weekend, which started on Friday for the locals, was a significant event not just for the city but also for the entire region. The project, which entails investments totaling 65 million euros, is supported by local government contributions of 5 million euros each from the city and the self-governing region, along with 15 million euros from the Ministry of Culture and the largest portion of 40 million euros from European funds. The opening weekend itself had a budget of 2 million euros and drew a large crowd to the streets of Trenčín.

The main event took place at Mierové námestie, featuring performances from notable artists like Jana Kirschner and the local legend Bez ladu a skladu, accompanied by the brass band Lucerkou. The event was visually striking and successfully engaged the community. However, it remains to be seen whether the project will also be effective in delivering on the promises made during the bid, reminiscent of discussions surrounding Košice’s title back in 2013.

Visitors arriving in Trenčín, whether by car, train or bus, immediately notice the blue and white signs announcing that they are entering a city heralding its European identity. This transformation reflects not only cultural aspirations but also the challenges and contrasts of implementing such a significant project, which aims to enhance community ties and stimulate local development through culture. The excitement surrounding the opening festivities suggests a strong local commitment to making the most of this cultural opportunity.
