Trenčín celebrated its opening weekend as the European Capital of Culture, featuring numerous events and performances throughout the city.
On Saturday, Trenčín hosted the main program for the opening weekend of the European Capital of Culture. The city saw a vibrant mix of events taking place at squares, clubs, and schools, with activities ongoing since Friday. Over the entire weekend, more than a hundred events featured nearly a thousand performers from Europe as well as Japan and Brazil, showcasing a wide array of cultural expressions.
Key political figures attended the official opening ceremony at the Trenčín castle, including Richard Raši, the Chairman of Parliament, and several cultural dignitaries. However, Minister of Culture Martina Šimkovičová and her state secretaries were notably absent, with reports suggesting she chose to remain at Hotel Elizabeth during the opening ceremony. President Peter Pellegrini also missed the event due to his commitment at the Olympic hockey tournament in Milan, further highlighting the tension between cultural commitments and political responsibilities.
The evening gala attracted thousands of spectators to Mierové Square, emphasizing the community's enthusiasm and participation in the cultural festivities. This event marks a significant cultural milestone for Trenčín as it aligns with the broader European initiative to promote culture and creativity across the continent, potentially boosting tourism and local pride in the years to come.
