Independence Square and Fountain to be Renovated after Lithuania's Presidency of the EU Council
Renovation of Independence Square and its fountain is scheduled for completion between 2027 and 2029, as Lithuania prepares for its upcoming EU Council presidency.
Lithuania's plan to renovate Independence Square and the fountain has been postponed to 2027-2029. The technical project for the construction work was prepared last year and has been coordinated with the relevant institutions, with an estimated cost of 15 million euros assigned for its execution. According to Algirdas Stončaitis, the Chancellor of the Seimas, it is impractical and irresponsible to commence such extensive work around the Seimas complex at this time due to Lithuania holding the presidency of the EU Council in the first half of next year.
With high-level international events planned at the Seimas during this period, the infrastructure around the parliament must remain intact to ensure safety and a welcoming atmosphere for guests from various European parliaments. The renovation project will be carried out in collaboration with the Vilnius City Municipality, which further emphasizes the importance of maintaining the area’s aesthetic and functional integrity during this critical period of international diplomacy.
Financial arrangements for this renovation project are still in discussion, indicating that neither the municipality nor the Ministry of Finance has secured the necessary funds for its implementation. This situation underscores the need for strategic planning in public works, especially when they coincide with significant national and international events.
