TODAY LIVE | Henry Sildaru takes off from the big stage

Estonian freestyle skier Henry Sildaru is set to compete in the men's Big Air qualification at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

Henry Sildaru, a 19-year-old freestyle skier from Estonia, is preparing to compete in the men's Big Air qualification of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics this upcoming Sunday. This event comes after a disappointing Olympic debut for Sildaru, where he finished 21st in the park qualification out of 28 athletes. With the qualification set to start at 20:30, the event will be aired live by ETV+ and ERR sports portal, with commentary provided by Kristjan Kallaste and Riho-Laast Laas, and reporter Debora Saarnak on-site.

Despite the previous setback, Sildaru has an opportunity to redeem himself in the Big Air event, a discipline that has not been his strongest suit historically. However, he managed to secure 14th and 15th place finishes in his previous competitions at the World Cup events in Aspen and Beijing, respectively. The Big Air format involves athletes performing three jumps, with the best two tricks' scores combined to determine the top 12 competitors who will advance to the finals.

Introducing Big Air to the Olympic program for the first time four years ago at the Beijing Olympics, the event has gained popularity, with athletes like Norway's Birk Ruud achieving historic victories. As Sildaru prepares for this competition, the Estonian audience remains hopeful for his success in the qualification round, recognizing the high stakes and excitement surrounding this exciting Olympic discipline.
