Fluff Factor and Coffee Break Snow - Become a Weather Expert with SMHI's Glossary
Dagens Nyheter collaborates with SMHI to compile a glossary of meteorological terms that are often unfamiliar to the general public.
Dagens Nyheter reached out to SMHI, Sweden’s meteorological and hydrological institute, to compile a list of meteorological terms that are often obscure to non-experts. This glossary aims to make weather-related terminology more accessible to the public. The terms are critical for understanding weather forecasts and the science behind meteorology and climate studies.
Among the listed terms are 'atmospheric bomb', defined as a significant drop in air pressure within a low-pressure system, and 'snow cannon', which refers to intense snow showers resulting from cold air moving over warmer waters. Other terms such as 'national frost day' and 'day thaw' also illustrate the unique climatic phenomena of Sweden, serving not only as educational tools but also as important elements in weather reporting and climate discussion.
By demystifying these meteorological concepts, SMHI and Dagens Nyheter are fostering a better understanding of weather conditions among the public. This initiative highlights the importance of clear communication in science, especially as discussions about climate change become more prevalent, and the demand for accurate weather interpretation increases in everyday life.
