Short track coach Silovs: Here one could only with courage, daring, and patience
Coach Silovs expressed pride in Latvia's short track team's achievements at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, highlighting the importance of courage and perseverance in their success.
At the Milan-Cortina Olympics, short track coach Silovs wore the Dutch national team's uniform while passionately supporting Latvian athletes. Following the competitions, he was ecstatic, stating, "I didn't know which way to look - gold there, bronze for Robis there." Silovs considered it one of the best days at work due to the outstanding performances he witnessed from the team.
After the initial races, Silovs had a strong feeling that Krūzbergs would achieve an excellent result, praising the entire Latvian team for their efforts. He emphasized that their achievements at these Olympics could significantly raise the profile of short track skating in Latvia. Currently, training is offered in Ventspils and Jelgava, but Silovs reminisced about a time when short track was considered exotic in Latvia, recalling the late 1990s and early 2000s when people were unfamiliar with the sport.
The success of the short track team, particularly their medal win, could help to further establish the sport on the athletic map of Latvia. Silovs expressed a mix of gratitude and pride for their progress, noting that they had once struggled for recognition but have now shown that they can compete successfully on an international stage. This shift in perception could inspire more athletes to pursue short track skating in the future, potentially leading to greater investments and interest in the sport.
