A wave of violence hit Valentine's Day: couples fought at home, attacks were also unavoidable at youth parties
Multiple incidents of domestic violence occurred in Lithuania on Valentine's Day, involving alcohol-fueled assaults between couples.
On Valentine's Day, a series of domestic violence incidents overshadowed the holiday's romantic atmosphere in Lithuania. In ViduklÄ—, a 53-year-old woman assaulted her 57-year-old husband shortly after 6 PM, leading to a call for medical assistance due to injuries. Both the woman and her 20-year-old son, who was also involved in the assault, were arrested and face criminal charges; they were found to be intoxicated.
Another violent incident occurred later in the evening in a nearby village, where a heavily intoxicated 56-year-old man attacked his partner, a 58-year-old woman who also had a high blood alcohol concentration. Although she received prompt medical attention, she did not need hospitalization, while the perpetrator ended up in custody with similar criminal charges pending against him.
The events highlight a troubling trend of domestic abuse during festive occasions in Lithuania, particularly when alcohol is involved. The violence not only affected individuals but also disrupted the intended spirit of love and affection associated with Valentine's Day, drawing attention to the need for better support systems and awareness initiatives against domestic violence.
