Remigijus Gaška, former advisor to the president, has died
Remigijus Gaška, a prominent figure who served as an advisor to Lithuania's President Valdas Adamkus, has passed away at the age of 91.
Remigijus Gaška, who was born in 1932 in Molėtai, Lithuania, and later fled to Germany in 1944, made notable contributions in various fields throughout his life. After completing his education at the Lithuanian gymnasium in Munich, he immigrated to the United States in 1950 where he earned master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering. Gaška had a long career at Dow Chemical from 1959 to 1995 and was also involved in sports as a basketball player and referee, even representing North American Lithuanian basketball teams at various competitions.
After returning to Lithuania in 1995, Gaška transitioned into public service. He worked in President Valdas Adamkus’ administration from 1998 to 2003 as an advisor on sports and youth issues, advocating for civic engagement among the youth and supporting sports organizations. His commitment to education and the community extended to offering scholarships to students from Punsko studying at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, further emphasizing his dedication to promoting Lithuanian culture and enhancing educational opportunities.
Gaška's legacy includes his influential roles in both the chemical industry and sports, as well as his unwavering support for Lithuanian youth, making him a respected figure in the community, particularly among expatriates and the diaspora. His passing marks the loss of a significant contributor to both Lithuania's development and the enrichment of its cultural landscape.
