Strengthening measures to control the screwworm in domestic and production animals in Yucatán

Yucatán's Secretaría de Desarrollo Rural reported 11 new cases of screwworm infestation in animals, raising the total to 1,598 with 42 still active.

The Yucatán state's Secretaría de Desarrollo Rural (Sader) has reported a total of 1,598 cases of screwworm infestations in domestic and production animals, with the latest update revealing an additional 11 cases. The active cases now stand at 42, while 1,556 have successfully recovered. The affected animals primarily include canines, with some instances noted in felines, bovines, and ovines. The urgent need for animal health measures has been highlighted due to the nature of the infestations and injuries encountered.

Most of the reported injuries, according to Edgardo Medina, the head of Sader, were localized in vulnerable areas including the mandible, ocular region, tail, dorsal region, ears, forelimbs, heads, navels, and hooves. The primary causes of these injuries have been linked to sharp objects and inter-animal fights, underscoring the necessity for thorough inspections of livestock and pets.

Given this situation, Sader emphasizes the importance of periodic health checks for both production animals and pets at home, aiming to prevent further spread of the infestation. This proactive approach is essential for safeguarding animal health and maintaining overall agricultural productivity in the region.
