Sader supervises progress at plant that will strengthen the eradication of the screwworm
The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué, announced the development of a national sterile fly strain during a supervisory visit to the Screwworm Plant in Chiapas, aimed at eradicating the screwworm affecting livestock.
Julio Berdegué, the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development in Mexico, recently visited the Screwworm Plant located in Metapa de Domínguez, Chiapas. During this visit, he highlighted the establishment of a national strain of sterile flies, which is critical to combatting the screwworm that poses a major threat to livestock. This initiative underscores the joint efforts of scientists from Mexico and Chiapas in producing their own colonies of sterile flies, which will facilitate the mass production needed for effective eradication efforts.
The Secretary emphasized that eradicating the screwworm is a collective responsibility that encompasses state governments, cattle ranchers, and the federal government of Mexico. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of local scientists and their pivotal role in ensuring a sustainable solution to this agricultural problem. The establishment of this plant is aimed at creating a self-sufficient system that minimizes dependency on external sources for pest control measures.
In a demonstration of progress, Francisco Javier Calderón Elizalde, the head of Senasica, briefed Berdegué on the advancements made in the facility. The project's swift execution was underscored, showcasing the commitment of the Mexican government to address this agricultural challenge effectively. The collaborative efforts involved aim to secure livestock health and protect the agricultural sector from the impacts of these pests, ensuring lasting benefits for the economy.
