Quick kit for methanol detection in drinks developed by UEPB will be used in Carnival 2026

A rapid kit for detecting methanol in distilled beverages, developed by researchers from the State University of Paraíba (UEPB), will be used during Carnival 2026 by the Procon-PB for inspections.

Researchers at the State University of Paraíba (UEPB) have developed a rapid kit capable of detecting methanol in distilled beverages, which will be utilized by Procon-PB during the Carnival festivities in 2026. This initiative is a response to concerns over the safety of alcoholic drinks, especially during large public events where consumption is high. Each kit can conduct up to 2,000 analyses, enabling prompt feedback and immediate action by inspection teams.

The methanol detection kit allows for the identification of not only methanol but also other harmful substances in alcoholic drinks within an average turnaround time of 15 to 20 minutes. This quick response capability is crucial for ensuring public safety, particularly during events like Carnival where the potential for health risks from contaminated beverages increases. The implementation of this technology reflects a growing awareness and proactive approach to drink safety in Brazil.

Initially, 200 kits were delivered to Procon-PB, each packaged in sealed containers to maintain their integrity for use during Carnival 2026. The project has received significant financial backing, amounting to R$ 1.5 million, and relevant training has been provided to Procon inspectors to effectively utilize these kits during the event. Such measures underscore the importance of consumer protection and health safety in festive environments, emphasizing proactive efforts to mitigate risks associated with alcohol consumption at public celebrations.
