Training Naval Personnel in Commercial Ship Inspections in Manzanillo

The training course aimed to enhance the naval personnel's capabilities in inspecting commercial ships and identifying risks associated with illicit activities.

A training course was held from February 9 to 13, 2023, at the Naval Unit of Port Protection in Manzanillo, Colima, aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the naval personnel in inspecting commercial ships. The course, which concluded with a ceremony and delivery of recognitions, focused on safe boarding procedures, inspection organization, identification of critical areas, document verification, operational interviews, and risk detection, along with concealment methods.

The training emphasized practical experience, with participants engaging in real aboard inspections of merchant vessels. This involved applying inspection techniques in various areas including accommodations, decks, and engine rooms. Additionally, the personnel analyzed plans and documentation, which bolstered their operational capabilities under real conditions, highlighting the importance of ongoing training in maritime safety and security.

According to the Ministry of the Navy, the initiative reflects a broader strategy to enhance maritime security and combat illicit activities in ports, thus ensuring safer navigation and trade. It demonstrates Mexico's commitment to improving its naval proficiency and addressing risks involved with maritime commerce, which is vital given the increase in global shipping activities and associated security challenges.
