A danger hidden in web browsers – Warning from Traficom
Traficom's cybersecurity center in Finland warns about the security risks posed by browser extensions, which can compromise user data and lead to malicious activities.
Traficom’s cybersecurity center has issued a warning regarding the potential dangers associated with browser extensions. These additions to web browsers are designed to enhance usability and improve productivity; however, they can also pose significant security risks. With extensive permissions granted to these extensions, they may have unrestricted access to all content processed by the browser, including visited websites and user-inputted data in forms.
The center highlights that the security of these extensions can often be inadequate, and some may even harbor malware. This malware can redirect users to harmful websites, leak data entered into the browser to cybercriminals, or manipulate the browser’s content to display harmful advertisements. Although harmful browser extensions are not a new phenomenon, some threat actors have been utilizing them for years, indicating a persistent risk that users need to be aware of.
In light of these threats, users are advised to be cautious when installing browser extensions, only downloading those from reputable sources and regularly reviewing the permissions required by these tools. The Norwegian cybersecurity authority also stresses the importance of maintaining a vigilant approach to Internet safety and protecting personal data while browsing.
