New frost record in Southern Finland

Southern Finland experiences a new record low temperature of -32.8 degrees Celsius in Vihti.

In Southern Finland, the winter has brought extremely low temperatures, culminating in a record frost of -32.8 degrees Celsius measured in Vihti during the night leading into Saturday. This surpasses the previous frost record of -31 degrees Celsius, also recorded at the same station on February 2. The cold snap affected other regions as well, with Lappeenranta reporting -32.6 degrees Celsius and Utsjoki's Kevojärvi recording the coldest temperature in the country at -33.6 degrees Celsius.

The cold weather, as reported by Foreca's meteorologist Kristian Roine, has shown notable drops approaching -30 degrees Celsius multiple times as January transitions into February. The chilly conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend, with clear skies contributing to the frosty weather. While Saturday and Sunday promise dry weather conditions, temperatures could drop further to around -30 degrees Celsius in Southern and Eastern Finland by early Sunday morning.

Furthermore, Roine highlights that the severe cold is facilitated by dry air and calm wind conditions, which have become a characteristic feature of this winter in Finland. Residents are being cautioned about the extreme temperatures and advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe as the cold continues to dominate the weather forecast for the region.
