Severe weather warning: Heavy rains and storms from tonight – Gale-force winds up to 9 Beaufort
Severe rain and thunderstorm warnings have been issued for regions in western and northern Greece through Sunday afternoon.
The Greek National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an urgent weather bulletin warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected from Saturday night until Sunday afternoon in several regions of western and northern Greece. Specifically, areas such as Corfu and Paxos will experience severe weather starting tonight and lasting until Sunday morning, while Epirus is set for intense rainfall from tonight until noon on Sunday. Additionally, eastern Macedonia and Thrace will see similar conditions on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to the rain, very strong to gale-force southerly winds are expected to sweep through the Ionian Sea today with speeds of 7 to 8 Beaufort, while tomorrow these winds will reach up to 9 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea, particularly in its eastern sections. The impending weather conditions are anticipated to facilitate the significant transfer of African dust to eastern Greece, affecting southern and central regions, including the Peloponnese and Crete, which may impact air quality and visibility.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautions, particularly by avoiding travel during the worst weather periods and securing outdoor items that could be affected by strong winds. The EMY continues to monitor the situation closely, issuing updates as necessary to ensure public safety and preparedness for the severe weather ahead.
