Weather: Storms and Gale Winds – The Areas in the 'Red' Today

Severe weather is expected throughout Greece today, with thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gale-force winds affecting various regions.

Today's weather forecast from the National Meteorological Service (EMY) indicates increased cloud cover with rain and sporadic thunderstorms across much of Greece. The strongest conditions are expected in western and southern Peloponnese, the Ionian islands, Crete, the Cyclades, and the northeastern Aegean islands, along with temporary effects in Thrace and the Dodecanese until the afternoon. Additionally, some central and northern mountainous areas may experience brief snowfall.

The stormy weather will be accompanied by very strong to gale-force westerly winds in the southern Ionian, as well as in the regions of Kythera and Crete. The winds will generally be blowing from the northwest at speeds of 4 to 6 Beaufort, reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort in the south, and locally touching 9 Beaufort at times. Meanwhile, the temperature is expected to remain relatively high for this time of year, ranging from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius in the north, 17 to 18 degrees in the Ionian and other mainland areas, and 18 to 19 degrees in the eastern island regions.

Overall, today's weather poses potential hazards, particularly due to the anticipated storms and strong winds, prompting local authorities and residents to remain vigilant. The forecast underlines the dynamic nature of the Greek climate, especially during transitional seasons, and highlights the importance of accurate weather monitoring and preparedness in reducing risks associated with severe weather events.
