Tractors have left Syntagma – Vasilissis Amalias and University opened to traffic

Tractors and farmers participating in a nationwide rally in Greece are gradually leaving Syntagma Square, allowing major roads to reopen.

In Greece, tractors and farmers who participated in a rally organized by the Nationwide Committee of Blocks are gradually withdrawing from Syntagma Square. The protest, which saw over 1,000 demonstrators gather before the Parliament, was aimed at addressing pressing issues such as high production costs, guaranteed prices for products, changes to the ELGA regulation, and the full payment of compensation. This gathering marks a response to a lack of satisfactory progress in previous discussions with the Prime Minister regarding these concerns.

The protest included around 200 farmers, livestock breeders, and beekeepers from Chania, supported by various organizations including civil servant unions, student groups, and agricultural cooperative leaders. Participants voiced their dissatisfaction over the government's failure to adequately address the issues impacting their livelihoods, emphasizing the urgency for the authorities to take meaningful action in response to their demands.

As the tractors cleared the area around Syntagma Square, vital roads such as Vasilissis Sofias, Vasilissis Amalias, and University Avenue were reopened for traffic. The police had previously imposed traffic restrictions in light of the large gathering. The rally reflects ongoing tensions between agricultural workers and the government in Greece, highlighting the critical need for policies that sufficiently support the agricultural sector amidst rising costs.
