Finnish athlete reported to be single - Quick action

Finnish biathlete Sonja Leinamo took swift action after learning that her relationship status was incorrectly listed as single on the International Biathlon Union's database.

Finnish biathlete Sonja Leinamo learned from Ilta-Sanomat in January that the International Biathlon Union (IBU) had her listed as single in their statistical service. Concerned about the inaccuracy of this personal information, she quickly acted to correct it. Leinamo reached out to Matilda Suhonen, the media representative of the Finnish Biathlon Federation, who subsequently contacted the IBU to inquire about the public nature of relationship statuses. The IBU responded that such information should not be public.

Following this revelation, it became apparent that many other athletes also had their relationship status listed, prompting the IBU to take action. Based on a random inspection, the IBU has since removed the relationship information from the profiles of several other athletes as well. This incident raises questions about how personal data is managed and displayed by sports organizations, emphasizing the need for privacy and accuracy in athletes' profiles.

Leinamo reflected on how her relationship status ended up on the IBU's website, recalling that she had updated her information five years ago when she transitioned from skiing to biathlon. She expressed concern over the handling of personal data and the implications it has for athletes in the public eye. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges surrounding privacy in sports and the importance of correct representation in public databases.
