Caregiver diverts R$ 115 thousand from elderly woman to go to parties, bars and even buy a motorcycle in Roraima

A caregiver in Brazil has been accused of embezzling R$ 115 thousand from a 74-year-old retired doctor by exploiting her access to the elderly woman's bank account.

A 20-year-old caregiver from Boa Vista, Roraima, has confessed to embezzling R$ 115 thousand from a 74-year-old retired doctor. The suspect reportedly discovered the elderly woman's bank password written on her phone case and began making unauthorized transfers using the PIX payment system. Notably, she spent the money on personal expenses, which included visits to parties, bars, and restaurants, as well as grocery shopping. In a striking act, she voluntarily turned over a motorcycle, purchased with the embezzled funds, to the police, along with R$ 500 in cash that remained from the money taken.

The caregiver, who had worked for three years caring for the victim's granddaughter, took advantage of her access to the elderly woman’s financial tracking. During her testimony, she revealed that upon checking the account, she noticed a total balance of R$ 250,000, which she exploited. To further her deceit, the caregiver launched a false online fundraising campaign, claiming she was gathering resources to build a house, thus manipulating the trust of others while continuing to siphon money from the elderly woman's account.

This case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by the elderly in Brazil and raises concerns regarding financial exploitation by those in trusted positions. The actions of the caregiver not only betray the personal trust placed in her by the victim's family, but they also point to broader issues regarding the protection of the elderly from financial fraud, a growing concern in society as a whole.
