All six former police officers not prosecuted for misconduct of the 'scuba unit' concerning lewd acts and assault
Six former police officers in Fukuoka have been not prosecuted for allegations of assault and non-consensual sexual acts involving junior officers.
On July 13, the Fukuoka District Prosecutors Office announced that six former police officers from the 2nd Mobile Unit of the Fukuoka Prefectural Police, including a 25-year-old ex-officer who was dismissed from his position, would not face prosecution despite being sent for formal charges related to assault and non-consensual sexual acts. The reasons for the decision not to prosecute were not disclosed publicly, leading to a wave of public scrutiny over police conduct and accountability.
The allegations concern a number of disturbing acts that reportedly occurred within the 'scuba unit,' responsible for water rescues and underwater searches. Between July 2024 and February 2025, police investigations had identified three criminal incidents and identified eight cases of power harassment impacting male team members. The allegations involved serious misconduct, including forcing junior officers to undress and dance, inappropriately touching them, and other degrading acts.
The Fukuoka Prefectural Policeβs Inspectorate revealed the extent of these acts and highlighted the officeβs ongoing struggle with officer behaviour that betrays public trust. Such revelations not only raise concerns about police culture and the safety of vulnerable officers within the force but also prompt calls for more rigorous scrutiny and reform in handling complaints of misconduct and harassment within police ranks.
