Marx Arriaga, who designed the Free Textbooks, is evicted from his office in the SEP
Marx Arriaga, the Director General of Educational Materials in Mexico's Ministry of Public Education, has reportedly been removed from his position, amidst a police eviction attempt.
Marx Arriaga Navarro, who has been at the forefront of creating Free Textbooks in Mexico, was allegedly evicted from his office at the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) on Friday. This incident has garnered attention following the release of a video on social media, which shows police at the scene trying to remove him from the offices located on Avenida Universidad. It appears that Arriaga faced this drastic action possibly due to controversies surrounding his role in educational reforms and textbook production.
In response to the situation, Marx Arriaga took to social media to share a photo capturing the police presence and urged a press conference scheduled for 5 PM on the same day. He voiced allegations of violence and harassment towards the Directorate of Educational Materials by external forces, reflecting a turbulent atmosphere surrounding educational policy in Mexico. His appeals to the police during the eviction, asking them to handcuff him "for the sake of making textbooks," underline the gravity of the tensions in his position.
Despite the incident's significant nature, the head of SEP, Mario Delgado, has yet to comment, leaving questions unanswered about the official stance on the treatment of Arriaga and implications for future educational policies. The event raises concerns about the stability within Mexicoβs educational leadership and the potential consequences for the Free Textbooks program and its development moving forward.
