Espeletia Lodge in Carchi: A Carnival Getaway 4,000 Meters Above Sea Level with Condors
Espeletia Lodge offers a serene escape amidst nature in Carchi, Ecuador, perfect for the carnival holiday.
Espeletia Lodge serves as an ideal retreat for those seeking tranquility during the carnival holiday, situated 4,000 meters above sea level in a stunning natural setting. Located in the La Libertad parish of Carchi, which is 187 kilometers from Quito, the lodge is surrounded by a vast forest of frailejones and enchanted paper trees (polylepis), creating a magical atmosphere for visitors.
The lodge's history traces back 30 years when the proprietors initially aimed to establish a trout farm in this remote area. However, after a disastrous rainstorm devastated their fish stock, they shifted their focus to tourism and conservation. Arturo Mier recalls how his father, during his time managing the trout farm, constructed pathways, built several cabins, and involved the local community in efforts to protect the natural environment, fostering a sense of responsibility towards sustaining the picturesque landscape.
Today, Espeletia Lodge stands out not only for its breathtaking views and abundant biodiversity but also as a significant example of community-led conservation. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings and the opportunity to observe condors and other wildlife, making it a perfect location for eco-tourism, especially during busy holiday seasons.
