EIM competition winners tested newly developed airspace protection measures for the first time

The winners of an EIM competition tested new airspace protection solutions developed by Lithuanian companies at a military polygon, highlighting the potential for innovation in national security.

In a significant development for Lithuania's national security, winners of the EIM competition have conducted live tests of airspace protection technologies at the Gen. Silvestro Žukausko polygon. This initiative, backed by the Lithuanian Armed Forces and coordinated by EIM alongside the Innovation Agency, aims to transition ideas into practical applications. According to the Minister of Economy and Innovation, Edvinas Grikšas, these tests showcase the potential of innovative solutions being developed by local companies and outline the directions for future advancements.

Announced in October 2025, the competition is designed to encourage businesses to develop technological solutions that enhance Lithuania's security. The focus is particularly on rapidly and effectively responding to threats from airborne objects that may enter Lithuanian airspace from other countries, including weather balloons and drones. By successfully implementing such measures, Lithuania aims to bolster its airspace security capabilities and mitigate potential risks associated with foreign-origin UAVs and similar threats.

EIM's initiative reflects a growing emphasis on innovation in the defense sector, indicating a proactive approach to national security challenges. This aligns with broader trends in global defense strategies where countries are increasingly relying on local innovations to enhance their military capabilities. As demonstrated by this event, the collaboration between government agencies and private enterprises can significantly contribute to developing effective responses to contemporary security threats.
