Air Force tests new drone defense system

The Estonian Air Force is currently testing a new drone defense system during the Digital Shield exercise in Ida-Virumaa, in collaboration with the U.S. Army.

This week in Ida-Virumaa, Estonia, the Air Force is taking part in a military exercise known as Digital Shield, where they are testing new drone defense systems in collaboration with the U.S. Army. The exercise is set to last for about a week and focuses on evaluating both existing and newly acquired drone systems. Notably, all systems being tested have proven their effectiveness in combat scenarios in Ukraine.

The main aim of this exercise is to digitally integrate drone detection and defense systems, allowing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to be detected and engaged from a single command center. Major Tõnis Pärn, the head of the Air Surveillance Division, stated that with this advanced setup, one operator can identify a drone and, by pressing a button, launch an effecter to neutralize the threat without needing personnel at the weapon systems. This innovative approach signifies a shift where personnel can operate from different locations, enhancing operational efficiency.

Estonia’s efforts to enhance its drone defense capabilities are becoming increasingly relevant given the current geopolitical climate. The successful integration of such systems is expected to take weeks to months, after which they will be put into active use. This initiative not only bolsters Estonia's defense posture but also illustrates the growing emphasis on technological advancements in modern warfare, particularly in countering potential drone threats.
