Survey: Two-thirds of Europeans feel their countries are threatened
A recent poll reveals that 68% of EU citizens perceive their countries as threatened in the current international climate, with significant concerns about personal safety.
A recent public opinion poll indicated that a significant majority, 68%, of participants from European Union countries feel that their nations are threatened due to the current international situation. The survey also highlighted that 42% of respondents are concerned about their personal safety. Among the EU member states, France reported the highest level of concern, with 80% of respondents feeling at risk, followed closely by the Netherlands and Denmark at 77%, and Germany at 75%. This suggests a profound sense of insecurity prevalent across the union.
Additionally, the survey, conducted by Demoscopic for the European Commission, showed that 32% of respondents believe that the EU has not taken sufficient steps regarding defense investment. However, 52% expressed confidence in the EU's capability to strengthen security and defense. Notably, the support for EU defense initiatives appears to be waning in the leading member states of Germany, France, and Italy, indicating a shift in perspective among key European powers regarding collective security measures.
The Eurobarometer 574 poll included around 27,000 participants from all 27 EU member states and was released just before the Munich Security Conference, underlining the urgency of these sentiments as European leaders gather to discuss security challenges. This context emphasizes the critical need for EU unity in addressing perceptions of threat and enhancing security measures in response to global dynamics that have generated widespread anxiety among its citizens.
