Eurobarometer: Two-thirds of Europeans believe their country is threatened
A new Eurobarometer survey reveals that a significant majority of Europeans feel their countries are under threat due to the current international climate, leading to calls for increased defense spending and support for EU security initiatives.
A recent Eurobarometer survey published in conjunction with the Munich Security Conference has highlighted a growing sense of insecurity among European citizens, with 68% stating that they believe their nation is threatened. This increased perception of vulnerability is most pronounced in countries like France (80%), the Netherlands and Denmark (77%), and Cyprus and Germany (75%). The results reflect a broader concern regarding personal safety as well, with 42% of respondents indicating that they feel their personal security is at risk.
The survey results come at a time when European nations are increasingly advocating for enhanced defense capabilities within the European Union. The majority (52%) of respondents expressed trust in the EU to bolster security and defense measures. This sentiment is crucial, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions and the recognition of the importance of collaborative defense initiatives among member states. Moreover, the perception of security threats is driving public opinion towards supporting greater investment in defense sectors.
Furthermore, respondents identified EU space programs as vital tools for addressing defense, security, environmental, climate, and competitiveness challenges. As Europe prepares to navigate a complex global landscape, the findings underscore the urgent need for strategic approaches to ensure collective safety and security across the continent, with citizens looking to their governments to take decisive action in these areas.
