Kenya: Communications Authority Activates Kenya's First Digital Sound Broadcasting Trial in Nairobi
The Communications Authority of Kenya has launched the country's first trial Digital Sound Broadcasting signal in Nairobi, coinciding with World Radio Day 2026.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has initiated the first trial of Digital Sound Broadcasting (DSB) in Nairobi, which is a significant development in the media landscape of Kenya. This launch aligns with the global celebration of World Radio Day 2026, reinforcing the importance of radio as a medium that purportedly reaches around 98% of Kenyan households. The introduction of DSB aims to enhance radio service quality and expand the broadcasting landscape in the face of FM frequency saturation in urban areas.
Currently, the FM frequencies in VHF Band II are fully occupied in major urban centers, leading to complications such as signal interference and inconsistent audio quality for radio users. The CA's new framework for DSB, focusing on the implementation of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) in VHF Band III and Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) in the HF band, addresses these challenges by providing alternative, less congested frequency bands for radio services. This move not only enhances audio quality but also creates opportunities for new entrants in the radio broadcasting sector in Kenya.
The trial is part of the CA's broader strategy to modernize and improve the efficiency of broadcasting in the country. It involves extensive consultation with stakeholders, including broadcasters and signal distributors, to ensure a smooth transition to this new technology. As the landscape of media continues to evolve, the trial of Digital Sound Broadcasting represents Kenya's commitment to embracing technological advancements in communications, fostering a more dynamic and competitive radio broadcasting environment.
