Suspect in Attempted Contract Murder 20 Years Ago Arrested in Cambodia

A suspect in an attempted contract murder case from over 20 years ago was arrested in Cambodia and has been extradited to South Korea.

A 60-year-old suspect, identified as Mr. K, who attempted a contract murder in 2004 on behalf of a real estate conflict, has been extradited from Cambodia to South Korea after living there for 18 years. The incident took place when Mr. K was given a directive to kill Mr. D; he and an accomplice attempted to run him over with a vehicle, causing significant injury. The investigation into the contract murder began when prosecutors were already looking into a fraud case involving the individual who solicited the murder, Mr. N.

The South Korean prosecution managed to catch Mr. N and two others in 2007 for their involvement, but Mr. K fled to Cambodia before he could be apprehended. Despite the years that passed, law enforcement agencies did not forget about him; they issued an Interpol Red Notice for his arrest based on a court order in 2008. After being arrested in Cambodia last year on unrelated fraud charges, local authorities notified South Korea's Ministry of Justice, leading to Mr. K's eventual extradition.

Upon his return to South Korea, Mr. K denied his involvement in the crime during questioning by prosecutors. Meanwhile, the original solicitors of the murder, including Mr. N, had already faced sentencing of 4 to 15 years in prison back in 2009. The Gwangju District Prosecutor's Office expressed its commitment to ensuring that Mr. K receives a punishment suitable for his crimes as they moved forward with the prosecution process.
