Eduardo Torres Wins Jaan Kaplinski Scholarship

Philosophy student Eduardo Torres has been awarded the Jaan Kaplinski scholarship for his research in language philosophy.

On February 13, during the Jaan Kaplinski Day held at the Estonian Literary Museum, the recipient of the fourth Jaan Kaplinski scholarship was announced. The scholarship was awarded to Eduardo Torres, who is currently studying in Ireland and is originally from Mexico, for his research in the language philosophy of Jaan Kaplinski. Torres has deeply immersed himself in Estonian culture during his time in schools in Tallinn and Tartu and has already effectively introduced Estonian culture to the world. He aims to explore Kaplinski's language philosophy from the perspective of English ordinary language philosophy as part of his bridge-building program.

The chair of the scholarship committee, Arne Merilai, noted that many significant and well-considered applications were received from distinguished scholars. Given the modesty of the fund, the committee preferred younger applicants who are starting their research careers. The Jaan Kaplinski Society aims to support researchers engaged in the investigation of Kaplinski's work, integrating it with current trends and issues of the 21st century, thereby ensuring the relevance and continuity of his legacy in contemporary cultural discussions.

This scholarship not only highlights the importance of Kaplinski’s contributions to language philosophy but also underscores the role of younger scholars like Torres in keeping the discourse alive. By fostering a deeper understanding of Estonian culture and philosophy, the scholarship serves as a vital link between past philosophical thought and current and future academic inquiry in the field.
