VR improved its profitability and set a passenger record in long-distance traffic

Finnish railway company VR reported a significant increase in profitability and achieved a record number of passengers in long-distance travel for the past year.

Finnish railway operator VR clearly improved its profitability last year, with a comparable operating profit rising over 53 percent to nearly 130 million euros. In the last quarter of the year, the operating profit reached nearly 29 million euros, an increase from the previous year's 26 million. This financial success is attributed to an increase in passenger numbers and improved services over the year.

According to CEO Elisa Markula, VR achieved its highest-ever number of journeys in domestic long-distance travel, totaling 16.1 million trips, reflecting a growth of over four percent from the previous year. This surge in travel is likely due to enhanced customer service, infrastructure, and a growing demand for rail travel in Finland. This achievement not only highlights the company's recovery post-pandemic but also their dominance in the Finnish rail market.

For the current year, VR anticipates increasing revenue, particularly thanks to growth in the Swedish market. The company secured new purchase traffic agreements in Sweden and has been operating services between Stockholm and Gothenburg since mid-2024. The railway operator expects its operating profit to remain stable this year at last year's level, marking a positive outlook for the business and continued investment in service improvements across its routes.
