The ice roads to Kihnu and Vormsi remain closed due to blizzard
The opening of the ice roads to Kihnu and Vormsi has been postponed indefinitely due to severe weather conditions caused by a snowstorm.
This week, the Transport Administration made preparations for the opening of the ice roads leading to Kihnu and Vormsi, but due to challenging weather conditions, their opening has been postponed indefinitely. Although the second and third official ice roads of the year were completed as planned, the arrival of a snowstorm has prevented their safe opening for traffic, according to the Transport Administration.
Currently, visibility on the ice roads is below 300 meters, making travel unsafe. Hannes Vaidla, the head of the Western Department of the Transport Administration's Road Maintenance Service, explained that blizzard conditions make it difficult and unsafe to maintain the ice roads. The authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions and will inform the public when it is safe to use these routes once the weather improves.
The Transport Administration urges people to avoid traveling on the unopen ice roads, as doing so poses a serious risk to life. The situation highlights the challenges of winter travel in Estonia and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines during severe weather events.
