Kihnu and Vormsi Will Have Ice Roads
The Estonian government has confirmed the construction of official ice roads to the islands of Kihnu and Vormsi.
Estonian officials, including the Regional and Rural Affairs Minister Hendrik Johannes Terras and Infrastructure Minister Kuldar Leis, met with local island representatives to discuss the establishment of official ice roads connecting the islands of Kihnu and Vormsi. This meeting brought together various stakeholders from island municipalities and government agencies, emphasizing the collaborative effort needed for this initiative.
Terras announced that the government would proceed with the construction of these ice roads, which aim to enhance accessibility and transport options for residents and visitors, particularly during the winter months when waterways freeze over. Infrastructure Minister Leis indicated that work on the ice roads would commence at the beginning of the week, with completion expected by the end of the week. This commitment highlights the government's attention to regional infrastructure development.
Despite the positive announcements, some concerns were raised regarding the delay in fulfilling these infrastructure responsibilities. Ingvar Saar, the mayor of Kihnu, expressed his confusion over the lack of progress on ice roads until now. This statement points to the broader issue of government accountability and the need for timely execution of infrastructure projects that benefit island communities, particularly as climate change continues to affect regional weather patterns and transportation options.
