ELSTAT: 4.1% decrease in car sales in January – double-digit increase in motorcycles

Car sales in Greece decreased by 4.1% in January 2026, while motorcycle sales saw a significant increase of 27.6%.

In January 2026, car sales in Greece recorded a decline of 4.1%, as reported by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). A total of 20,874 cars (new or used from abroad) were registered during this month, compared to 21,762 in January 2025. This drop follows a previously reported decrease of 3.4% in January 2025 versus January 2024. Of the registered vehicles, new cars constituted 10,807, which reflects a 6.5% decline from 11,563 new cars registered in January 2025.

In stark contrast to the decline in car sales, motorcycles experienced a notable surge during the same period. Specifically, 4,702 new motorcycles with an engine capacity exceeding 50 cc were registered, marking an impressive increase of 27.6% from 3,684 motorcycles sold in January 2025. This surge is noteworthy especially considering that, in January 2025, motorcycle sales had plummeted by 25.6% compared to January 2024, indicating a possible recovery and shifting consumer preference towards two-wheeled vehicles.

These statistics from ELSTAT highlight the current trends in the automotive industry within Greece, reflecting broader economic patterns and consumer behaviors. The decline in car sales could signify a tightening market or possibly increased costs driving consumers towards more economical transportation options like motorcycles. The contrasting trends in car and motorcycle sales may suggest a shift in consumer priorities and the potential impact of economic factors on transportation choices.
