Nigerian troops successfully rescued 11 hostages from kidnappers and repelled an attack by ISWAP militants in Borno State.
Nigerian security forces have successfully rescued 11 hostages following the thwarting of abduction attempts along key roads in Borno State, as reported by the country's presidency through an army statement. The rescue occurred amidst heightened security operations targeting insurgent activities in the region, notably from groups like the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). On February 5, the troops executed a counter-offensive against ISWAP militants which allowed them to free the hostages as they repelled a significant late-night attack.
The operation not only led to the rescue of the kidnapped victims but also resulted in the neutralization of 16 insurgents believed to be part of the ISWAP group. In their efforts, the Nigerian security forces recovered a significant number of items essential for insurgent operations, including over 20 bicycles, weapons, and logistic supplies. The strategic operation underscored the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian troops in maintaining order and safety in regions deeply afflicted by militant activity, emphasizing the importance of continued counter-insurgency efforts to alleviate the security situation in Borno State.
Furthermore, the troops made several arrests of suspected ISWAP logistics suppliers who were apprehended while transporting large quantities of drugs intended for terrorists around the Bukarti axis. The successful rescue and ongoing operations highlight a determined push by Nigerian military forces to mitigate the threats posed by these insurgent groups, aiming to restore safety and security to affected communities in the northeast of the country.
