Gazprom Neft, a prominent Russian energy company, has announced a major oil discovery in the Yamal Peninsula, identifying it as the largest in the area in three decades. This new field is situated within the Arctic zone of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region, an area known for its vast natural gas resources but also rich in untapped oil potential. Despite its promise, the region presents considerable exploration and drilling challenges, primarily due to its extensive permafrost coverage which complicates operations.

The oil field represents part of a larger oil and gas cluster located in the southern part of the Yamal Peninsula, a discovery made possible after three years of comprehensive exploration, which included both 2D and 3D seismic surveys. The company reported that an appraisal well, drilled to 2.7 kilometers, yielded commercial quantities of low-sulfur and low-viscosity oil, along with gas and condensate. Estimates suggest that the geological reserves of the newly discovered field are around 55 million tons, a substantial addition to the region’s energy profile.

This oil discovery aligns with Russia’s ongoing endeavors to tap into its northern territories' energy riches amidst global demand for hydrocarbons.
