The Secretary General of the Skeleton Sports Association Dreams of Zunte Achieving a Top Ten Finish at the Olympics

Freddy Tomingas, Secretary General of the Estonian Skeleton Sports Association, expressed hopes for Darta Zunte to finish in the top ten at the upcoming Olympics as she prepares for her debut representing Estonia.

Freddy Tomingas, the Secretary General of the Estonian Skeleton Sports Association, visited the ERR sports studio to discuss the upcoming Olympic debut of Darta Zunte, a skeleton racer with Estonian roots. At 25 years old, Zunte acquired Estonian citizenship in 2022, as her grandfather was originally from Estonia. This unique background raises questions about what led a Latvian athlete to choose to represent Estonia at the Olympic Games, and how the country has been able to support such a gifted athlete in the sport of skeleton.

Tominga explained that Zunte's decision to compete for Estonia was mutual, as the country's skeleton sports association was in a transitional phase and needed athletes. Zunte's arrival and desire to represent Estonia sparked the formation of a more structured association composed of former sledders and other enthusiasts. This collaboration reflects how nations can be enriched by the diverse backgrounds of their athletes, bringing new talent to their sporting efforts.

As Tomingas shared the expectations for their Olympic athlete, he conveyed an ambitious sentiment, stating that they would be incredibly proud if Zunte finishes in the top ten, while acknowledging that a finish within the top fifteen would still constitute a significant achievement for Estonia. This ambition showcases not only the potential rise of Zunte but also the hope for increased recognition of skeleton sports in Estonia as they prepare to compete on the world stage.
