A forum focusing on the integration of handball into the Sports Toto system will take place at the National Assembly on the 24th, aiming to enhance the sport's popularity and sustainability in South Korea.
The National Assembly will host a forum entitled ‘Inclusion of Handball in Sports Toto and Innovation Strategies for the Sport’ on the 24th of this month. This event is co-organized by lawmakers including Cho Kye-won and Kim Gyo-heung, along with others from the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee. The Korea Handball Association and the Korean Handball Federation stated that the forum aims to heighten public interest in the sport and foster South Korea’s competitiveness on the international stage by including handball as a new Sports Toto category.
Cho Kye-won emphasized the need for handball to evolve from being an underappreciated sport, despite its historical success in the Olympics, to a self-sustaining industry. He remarked that integrating handball into the Sports Toto framework could provide necessary funding and broaden its base of support, ensuring the sport does not merely maintain its current status but rather develops into a more established and sustainable sector.
The forum will also see participation from various government bodies, including the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, and the Korea Sports Council, as well as coaches and athletes. This gathering of stakeholders is pivotal for discussing strategies that will support the growth and popularity of handball in South Korea through increased financial backing and public engagement.
