HEALTH DEPARTMENT ⟩ The flu has already claimed 72 lives: the virus is particularly affecting the elderly

Respiratory viruses, including the flu, COVID-19, and RSV, continue to spread widely in Estonia, primarily affecting the elderly and young children.

In Estonia, respiratory viruses are spreading extensively, with a reported 4,270 cases registered last week. The influenza virus, along with COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), is placing a considerable strain on healthcare facilities, especially concerning the elderly and young children who are more vulnerable to severe illnesses. Although the Health Department suggests that the peak of the outbreak may have passed, high levels of morbidity are expected to persist for weeks to come.

The high illness rates are particularly concerning as they impact core sectors like education, social care, and health institutions. During the sixth week of the year, more than a third of those infected were children aged 14 and under. Major viruses contributing to the ongoing public health concern include influenza, RSV, rhinoviruses, and SARS-CoV-2, with no significant regional discrepancies reported in infection rates across the country.

Additionally, over a thousand individuals have been hospitalized due to influenza. While the immediate threat may lessen, the potential for seasonal outbreaks remains, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance in monitoring and managing respiratory infections, particularly among high-risk populations. The health authorities are actively urging the community to maintain preventive measures as the flu season persists.
