Public transport may be delayed by 10 to 15 minutes
Due to a snowstorm, buses and trolleybuses in Riga are experiencing delays of 10 to 15 minutes, while tram services remain unaffected.
In Riga, buses and trolleybuses are currently running behind schedule by 10 to 15 minutes due to a snowstorm, as reported by Baiba Bartaševiča-Feldmane, head of the Public Relations Department at the municipal company "Rīgas satiksme." The delays are mainly attributed to traffic accidents caused by adverse weather conditions that slow down transportation. Notably, tram services in the city have not been impacted by the storm as of yet.
City officials, including Jānis Lange, the executive director of Riga, confirmed that the so-called snowstorm tickets were not implemented today. This decision is based on consultations with various services, including meteorologists, who believe that the snowfall will be manageable and does not warrant such measures. Snowstorm tickets are designed to assist city services in clearing heavy snowdrifts more effectively under severe conditions. Lange emphasized that the current snowfall does not reach the levels forecasted that would necessitate these tickets, and he further noted that such a plan could cost the municipality up to €200,000 per day.
A significant snowstorm is expected to hit Latvia on Friday night into Saturday, potentially causing more widespread disruptions across the country. As preparations are underway, the city aims to ensure that transportation remains as efficient as possible despite the challenging weather. Officials are closely monitoring the situation, ready to adapt to the evolving conditions and mitigate impacts on public transport and safety.
