Aid for Ukraine: The USA has almost completely stopped its support
The EU has taken on the majority of financial support for Ukraine as U.S. aid has dwindled significantly and is expected to cease almost entirely by 2025.
According to a report from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel), the European Union (EU) has become the primary provider of financial support for Ukraine as U.S. assistance has dramatically decreased and is projected to be nearly zero by 2025. In contrast to the U.S., which provided a significant portion of military and humanitarian aid in 2024, the EU expanded its military aid to Ukraine by 67% and its financial and humanitarian assistance by 59%. The decline in U.S. support occurred following Donald Trump's return to the White House, signaling a shift in U.S. foreign policy that left Ukraine vulnerable.
The report highlights that while the overall military aid commitments for Ukraine have fallen by 13% due to the U.S. withdrawal, the EU's enhanced support demonstrates a significant shift in responsibility for Ukraine's defense. The EU's increased contributions come amid ongoing conflicts in the region, where Ukraine continues to face threats from Russia. This support is crucial for Ukraine's military capabilities and overall stability, hinting at the changing landscape of international alliances and financial dependencies in the wake of U.S. policy changes.
The implications of reduced U.S. support could be profound, potentially emboldening adversary actions against Ukraine and limiting its resources during a critical period of defense. As a result, the EU's proactive measures become pivotal not just for Ukraine's survival but for the stability of Eastern Europe, emphasizing the need for solidarity among European nations in facing common threats.
