Shark found dead on the beach in SP; VIDEO

A blacktip shark pup was found dead on Praia Grande, São Paulo, and is being studied by local researchers.

A blacktip shark pup (Carcharhinus limbatus) was discovered dead and decomposing on Praia Grande, in the coastal region of São Paulo, on Thursday morning. The shark had beached itself at Jardim Real and was collected for further study. According to biologist Otto Bismarck Fazzano Gadig from São Paulo State University (Unesp), the shark's death might be linked to its reproductive season as females tend to approach the shore to give birth during summer.

Gadig indicated that the shark's demise could also be related to interactions with fishing activities. He suggested that it may have died entangled in a fishing net, managed to escape, and then washed ashore. While he highlighted that this incident is not unusual, he emphasized that the definitive cause of death will need to be confirmed through examinations.

The municipality of Praia Grande reported that the animal was collected by city teams and will be sent for studies. This case raises awareness about the interactions between local fishing practices and marine wildlife, suggesting a need for further investigation and possibly the implementation of measures to protect vulnerable marine species from such incidents.
