Fire in a war veteran's house – conditions difficult

A wooden war veteran's house caught fire in Luumäki, with firefighters facing challenging conditions while combating the blaze.

A fire broke out in a wooden war veteran's house located on Somerharjuntie in Luumäki, prompting emergency services to respond shortly after 2:55 PM. A total of 17 firefighting units were deployed to the scene throughout the day to tackle the fire, which proved to be difficult due to challenging conditions. According to on-site fire chief Pasi Tarkiainen from the South Karelian rescue services, the flames have since been subdued, but efforts to extinguish and clear the aftermath are expected to take several more hours.

Fire chief Tarkiainen reported that there is currently no risk of the fire spreading to other nearby structures, although the fire's location in the intermediate floor made it difficult for firefighters to apply water. The proximity of the road was inadequate for easy access, compounded by snow, which hindered vehicle movements to the area. However, the roof panels have been removed, allowing firefighters to reach the burning parts more effectively.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries stemming from the incident, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The on-site team aims to fully extinguish the fire within the day, yet acknowledges that the firefighting and cleanup operations will require more time to ensure safety and thoroughness in their efforts.
