Highway and streets are flooded after heavy rains in Acre; VIDEO
Heavy rains causing around 78 mm of precipitation led to significant flooding in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, disrupting daily life and affecting both urban areas and road access.
On the last Wednesday (11), Cruzeiro do Sul in Acre experienced severe flooding after receiving about 78 mm of sustained and prolonged rainfall, which disrupted daily life for many residents. The downpours are reported to have been more abundant in recent months compared to the previous five years, as indicated by the local Fire Department commander, Major Josadac Cavalcante. The flooding primarily affected urban streets and highways, exacerbated by the overflow of local streams.
Despite the extent of the flooding, the local Fire Department registered only one major incident involving the collapse of a wall in the Cruzeirão neighborhood, with no significant damage reported otherwise. The heavy rainfall has also caused a section of highway AC-407, which connects to Rodrigues Alves, to be closed due to rising water levels. First responders have been dispatched to assess the situation further and determine the necessity for additional interventions.
This flooding incident highlights the increasing challenges faced by communities in Acre due to climate patterns, especially during the wetter months of December, January, and February, which have seen heightened rainfall. As local authorities address immediate concerns, the local population remains vulnerable to the impacts of ongoing adverse weather conditions, raising questions about preparedness and infrastructure resilience in the face of climate change.
