Bangladesh: Tarique Rahman's Dynamic Comeback After 15 Years, Wins from Both Seats
Tarique Rahman, president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a contender for Prime Minister, has informally won two significant seats in Bangladesh's 13th parliamentary elections after a 15-year political exile.
In the recent 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, the president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a prime ministerial candidate, achieved informal victories in two crucial seats: Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6. This win is especially significant for Rahman as it marks his return to the political scene after a long absence of 15 years. His party's member, Shairul Kabir Khan, confirmed the results, highlighting Rahman's victory as a turning point in Bangladeshi politics, particularly with the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, being out of the electoral race.
On election day, Rahman cast his vote at the Gulshan Model High School and College polling station in the capital, Dhaka, at around 9:30 a.m., accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and daughter, Jayma Rahman. Following his voting, he urged the public to come out in large numbers to exercise their voting rights, stating that the people of Bangladesh had long awaited this moment and had regained their rights through the elections. His re-entry into politics signals potential shifts in the political landscape of Bangladesh and could lead to renewed competition in future elections, particularly given the absence of the ruling party in the current electoral cycle.
