A book about the life of Latvian emigration and the experience of the diaspora in Sweden has opened in Stockholm
A new book titled "Latvians in Sweden" has been launched in Stockholm, detailing the history and experiences of the Latvian diaspora in Sweden.
The launch of the book "Latvians in Sweden" was celebrated in the cozy setting of the Estonian House in Stockholm, attracting a full house eager to meet the authors and guests. This comprehensive 446-page volume encompasses academic studies, stories, and personal recollections about Latvians in Sweden, chronicling their journey from the arrival of Latvian refugees to contemporary experiences. In recognition of a younger generation who may not speak Latvian, the book includes summaries in English.
Austra Krēsliņa, the evening's moderator, emphasized the community's longing to discuss their identity and origins, raising questions about where they, as a society, fit into Sweden. She pointed out that while the mission of the diaspora was clear in the past, the current mission of the Latvian community in Sweden now needs exploration—suggesting there is more than just preserving language and culture. She senses a budding movement within the community, indicating a desire for deeper engagement and a collective purpose moving forward.
Musicians and composers also contributed to the celebratory event, underscoring the cultural richness present in the Latvian diaspora. This gathering not only marks the release of a significant literary work but also reflects a growing interest and investment in the cultural and historical narratives of Latvians in Sweden, highlighting the importance of storytelling in diaspora communities.
