[Breaking News] Democratic Party issues a warning to Choi Min-hee for ‘accepting cash gifts at daughter’s wedding’ during National Assembly audit – “Violation of duty to maintain dignity”
The Democratic Party's ethics committee issued a warning to lawmaker Choi Min-hee for accepting cash gifts during her daughter's wedding held at the National Assembly, citing a breach of norms regarding maintaining the dignity of the party.
On December 12, the ethics committee of the Democratic Party issued a warning to lawmaker Choi Min-hee, who faced controversy for holding her daughter's wedding at the National Assembly and accepting cash gifts during the National Assembly audit period. The committee acknowledged that this action violated the party's duty to maintain dignity as outlined in its ethical regulations. The warning is classified as a minor disciplinary action that can include reprimand or suspension if the misconduct is deemed minor. Choi, who serves as the chairperson of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, faces further scrutiny following last year's incident. Upon notification of the disciplinary decision, Choi may apply for a retrial if she chooses to contest the ruling.
Additionally, the ethics committee has set a new date for additional evidence investigation regarding allegations of sexual misconduct involving lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae, which is scheduled for the 16th of next month. Jang is currently under police investigation for allegedly harassing a female aide from another member's office at a restaurant in Yeouido, Seoul, in October 2024. Both lawmakers attended the ethics committee meeting where the decisions were made. Previously, the head of the ethics committee, Han Dong-soo, mentioned during a media interview that he had issued a directive for an official investigation into allegations against both lawmakers, reflecting the party's commitment to addressing ethical concerns among its members.
