Niklas Rubin, a Swedish goalie, has decided to extend his contract with Oulu Kärpät for the next season after a successful first year with the team.
Niklas Rubin, a 30-year-old Swedish goalkeeper, has confirmed his contract extension with Oulu Kärpät for the upcoming season in the SM-liiga, Finland's top ice hockey league. Joining Kärpät at the start of the current season, Rubin had an option in his contract for an additional year, which he has now exercised. He expressed satisfaction with his decision, stating it aligns perfectly with his and his family's needs and that he feels secure in the familiar environment of the team. He has had extensive discussions with the club's sports director, Kimmo Kapasen, and shares a mutual vision for the team's future.
Rubin has established himself as an elite goalie in the SM-liiga, previously playing for Porin Ässät from 2022 to 2025, where he garnered recognition as the league’s best goalkeeper last year, winning the Urpo Ylönen trophy. His move to Kärpät was reportedly backed by a substantial salary, making him the highest-paid player in the league for the current season, with net earnings close to 180,000 euros. This financial support reflects the club's ambition to retain top talent and compete effectively in the league.
Despite facing injury challenges earlier in the season, Rubin has managed to play 28 games for Kärpät, achieving eight wins in regulation time and boasting a solid save percentage of 89.92%. His performance, commitment, and continuity with the team will be crucial as Kärpät aims for success in the next league season, showcasing the importance of retaining key players to maintain competitive momentum.
