Seoul Central District Court Confirms Two Special Courts for Insurrection Cases and Appoints Two Judges for Warrants
The Seoul Central District Court has established two special courts for insurrection cases and appointed two judges for warrant reviews, effective from the 23rd of this month.
The Seoul Central District Court has officially confirmed the establishment of two dedicated courts specifically for handling insurrection cases, along with the appointment of two judges tasked with overseeing warrant applications. This decision is set to take effect starting on the 23rd of the month. The court underscored that this initiative is part of complying with the 'Special Act on Criminal Procedures for Insurrection, External Trade, and Rebellion Crimes,' which aims to streamline the judicial process for these serious offenses.
On the 12th, the court announced that the Judicial Committee had prepared a division of responsibilities based on previously established guidelines from an overall judges' council. Following a random selection process for the six candidate courts, which judges observed either in person or via video conference, two special courts were chosen for insurrection cases through an online voting procedure that took place from the afternoon of the previous day until just after noon on the day of the announcement.
The two appointed insurrection courts will include judges who have been recognized for their experience and stature within the judicial system. Each court will operate with three judges working collaboratively on cases, establishing a level of checks and balances. This structure is designed to ensure thorough, unbiased reviews of the serious matters before them, and is accompanied by the installation of judges dedicated to the warrant process to enhance judicial efficiency and accountability in handling such significant cases.
