State Analysts Question €136 Million Plan for Slovensko.sk Repairs

State analysts have raised concerns over a proposed €136.5 million modernization plan for the Slovensko.sk portal, doubting its feasibility within a six-month timeframe.

Analysts from the Value for Money (ÚHP) department of the Slovak Ministry of Finance have publicly challenged the financial assessment of a significant megaproject aimed at repairing the government portal Slovensko.sk. Initially, the plan estimated costs at just under €28 million, but additional projects proposed by Minister Migaľa’s department have inflated the budget to €136.5 million, with the government approving nearly €110 million in funding. The escalation in costs has raised eyebrows and prompted scrutiny from financial analysts.

Part of the skepticism stems from doubts about whether the proposed projects can be completed within the allotted six-month period. Analysts at ÚHP have pointed out that the project's deadlines may be unrealistic, and they are not convinced by the government's arguments that an overhaul is necessary to prevent the portal from collapsing. The original modernization plan aimed to address 16 different life situations to improve digital efficiency; however, concerns now loom over its execution and the unprecedented increase in funding required.

The situation underscores the ongoing challenges within government IT projects in Slovakia, particularly in balancing modernization needs with fiscal responsibility. As the government seeks to revamp a critical digital service, the debate over cost, timelines, and project management reflects broader issues in public sector efficiency, transparency, and the critical eye of financial assessments in the allocation of taxpayer money.
